Museum

Photo and Archives Collection

Established in early 1990 when we secured historic family photos from various Nicodemus families. Our collection is held at the Spencer Research Library, Kansas Collection, Kansas University and is overseen by Deborah Dandridge, KU Field Archivist. Used by professionals, scholars, historians, writers, the media, etc., our collection is one of the most comprehensive African American photographic/materials collection in the nation. We encourage families to donate to our collection to insure that your family and its Nicodemus connection is not forgotten. Anyone wanting a copy of a particular photo for their personal family files can do so by reviewing the collection and requesting a copy. A small copying and use fee is required.

Objects Collection

Our object collection began in the early 1990 when we received a small souvenir pitcher from the 1908 Worlds Fair in Chicago. It was etched with the name Sarah Bates and was purchased at an estate sale years ago. The owners donated it, feeling that it belonged back in the community at our museum. This is just an example of the type of objects that have been donated over the years. Angela attended an objects training and management program, sponsored by the Kansas State Historical Society in 2006/07. After training, an objects collection event was held, and several community residents donated objects to our collection. Objects are important in telling the story of the settlers and descendents at Nicodemus. Do you have an object to donate from your family?
